Inaugurated on 26 August, Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and Northern Ring Motorway are prepared for winter. Running the motorway and the bridge, ICA serves on 24/7 basis with its expert staff and cutting-edge equipment.
Preparations for winter on Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and Northern Ring Motorway where measures were taken to enable a safe and smooth driving for drivers under heavy winter conditions were completed. Icing Early Warning System and traffic control camera system were provided by İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) and General Directorate of Highways (KGM) while ICA performs Preventive Measures and Corrective Measures on the bridge and motorway.
Within the scope of preventive measures, trucks equipped with the cutting-edge technology measure the temperature of asphalt to take precautions against icing on the road surface. Without waiting for snow or frost, salt trucks run on their respective regions at least 4 hours before the estimated time of event. This ensures that the entire route is prepared for frost. Within the scope of corrective measures, snow plowers and teams work 24/7 to open the road. This ensures that the road surface temperature is maintained at a constant degree. Teams work in cycles to make sure that the frost hazard is passed.
All control at ICA Main Control Center
Entire motorway route and bridge passages along Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and Northern Ring Motorway are managed at the Main Control Center inside ICA operation building and each incident/need can be immediately intervened/met. So much so, with the GPS system designed specifically for deicing, all information related to location, temperature/heat sensor, speed, amount and type of disposed material, remaining amount, distance covered can be seen on the data network which can be accessed by the driver operator and Main Control Center.
Intervention on 3 lanes at the same time
Equipped with cutting-edge maintenance equipment and expert teams, Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and Northern Ring Motorway have also especially designed anti-snow trucks. Mounted with Solution Reservoir and Spraying Mechanism, trucks can intervene in 3 lanes on the motorway. Trucks equipped with Salt Damper and Sprinkler Equipment can sprinkle 12 m salt and mix the salt with the solution to sprinkle for a more effective solution, if needed.
Snow plough blades to be mounted on the trucks during winter maintenance have motion and stability sensors. During ploughing, these blades can move automatically in sections of speed bumps or expansion joints, ensuring that no damage occurs on the material. Then, they go back to their original state. There are two types of blades. Telescopic Blades can be expanded to remove snow piled up on safety lanes.
Towing cranes are on stand-by in critical points In addition to snow ploughing and salt trucks, towing cranes will be placed in critical points 10 km of each other and they will be allocated in case of an emergency, without hindering the traffic flow. Maintenance teams are paired with the patrol team and equipment ensuring Traffic Safety on 24/7 basis. With the warning signs in these vehicles, informative digital text displayed on VMS panels on the motorway ensures prevention of any cases risking the traffic safety.
Drivers can call the 24/7 free help line 161 to ask for help in case of EMERGENCY during their travel on the motorway including accidents, injuries, fire etc.
